Class 9 | Chapter 14 | Statistics | Example 14 & 15

Example 14: Find the mode of the following marks (out of 10) obtained by 20 students:

4, 6, 5, 9, 3, 2, 7, 7, 6, 5, 4, 9, 10, 10, 3, 4, 7, 6, 9,9

Example 15: Consider a small unit of a factory where there are 5 employees : a supervisor and four labourers. The labourers draw a salary of Rs 5,000 per month each while the supervisor gets Rs 15,000 per month. Calculate the mean, median and mode of the salaries of this unit of the factory.

Measures of Central Tendency

Very often we need to analyse a given data to find a value that can represent the entire data set. In other words we say the central tendency of the data set. Different types of data would require different methods to find this central value which can be used as the representation of the entire data set. For example, average number of students can be find using the mean of the data, splitting apples in large sized and small sized groups would require median and for a shoe company mode will be the best measure to decide about the investment.

So, following are three measures of central tendency that you must understand by watching the video embedded below.

  • Mean
  • Median
  • Mode
